The city was settled in the mid-1800s and in 1855 the first post office was opened; Hiram Lewis, a Pony Express rider, became the town's first postmaster. During World War II the United States Army Air Forces built a training base in the southernmost part of Windsor, today known as the Charles M Schultz - Sonoma County Airport.
